Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the nature of the player's talent. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
