The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
