US Leaders Are Removing Black History: How This Threatens Our Tomorrow

Democracy prospers as African American communities advance. Data confirms: citizenship by birth, constitutional due process, equal opportunity legislation from education to housing to employment and fair business funding are all byproducts institutional reforms known today as DEI. Yet, recently, DEI has served as a smokescreen by calculating policymakers and campaigners to roll back progress and consolidate power.

Measurable Consequences of These Tactics

The effect of these approaches is concrete and undeniable. Since the start of this year, research has found that over three hundred thousand African American women have lost their jobs while $3.4bn in grant programs investing in African American neighborhoods has been eliminated – including $9.4m for sickle cell studies, $42 million for initiatives aimed at reducing maternal death rates in Black communities plus $31 million in reductions to address asthma prevalence and air pollution harming African American youth.

Historical Perspective and Broader Implications

Coordinated efforts to stifle the advancement of Black communities is not new; nevertheless, history has proven that when advancements for African Americans are removed, all communities face negative consequences. In the Reconstruction era, Black Americans achieved remarkable progress – serving in government, establishing enterprises and founding schools. Rarely mentioned is how other oppressed communities, including poor white farmers to Hispanic workers, also benefited from increased access to legal and economic systems.

Distortion is one of the most insidious tactics. It reshapes reality in ways that narrow our expectations and institutionalizes prejudice as policy.

When Black people encountered decades of segregation laws and government-approved bias, additional populations saw a similar retreat on their access to full citizenship. As the equality movement sought to eliminate the vestiges of Jim Crow, its practices of peaceful protest increased liberty and access not just for Black Americans, but for communities of all backgrounds. From the Native American movement to progress in gay rights to female financial independence, African American equality efforts opened the aperture for greater civil liberties.

Current Challenges and Intentional Efforts

However, whenever Black communities make progress, forces threatened by change work to push us back. While confronting present leadership, DEI serves as the defense that guarantees a pluralistic democracy. Its power stems not from partisanship, but from the ideal of the nation's foundation: that every individual possess equal worth and deserve a chance to succeed.

It's essential to recognize these assaults as part of a deliberate campaign. The objective is to alter our nation's story and limit the prospects of Black Americans, and by extension, any American considered inferior. It's easy to perceive these measures in isolation, but this is intentional.

Educational and Economic Consequences

Scholarships and education programs are being cut, leaving Black students with reduced opportunities to pursue a quality education. These cuts also affect Native American students and served as a predicate for attacks on Latino scholars. Black families continue to live in areas having poorly funded education because of longstanding practices of segregation and inequality, and the resulting impact of cutting programs unequally affects all low-income children and individuals with disabilities.

Funding for African American enterprises and crucial healthcare programs have been slashed, causing the country lacking the information necessary to address institutional inequalities within the economic system and medical infrastructure. The follow-on effect will undermine research and investment for women of all ethnic backgrounds. By rewriting who counts, who is valued and what histories are taught, these approaches compound the barriers that communities have fought for centuries to overcome.

Erasure and Suppression in Tandem

Removal and censorship work in tandem, and practitioners predictably start with the African American community. Those seeking to cripple democracy have eliminated African American narratives from educational materials, exhibits and public memory, costing us the lessons of confrontation, correction and redemption. Rising autocracies know to pressure educational institutions, universities, corporations and public agencies toward quiet compliance.

Moving Ahead and Collective Responsibility

The question before us now is: how will we respond to these developments? Will we allow fear, disinformation and authoritarianism to write the next chapter? Or should we take action, determinedly and intentionally, to defend the truth, honor Black progress and protect the right to opportunity for all citizens? The response will influence not only the present, but also the destiny of our country.

Safeguarding and preserving the significant advancements we've made is a moral imperative, one that demands coordinated public engagement. Like the fight for liberation has taught us, when we struggle for liberty, we succeed. We certainly confront coordinated attacks on truth, which are intended to create hopelessness or cause paralysis – but we cannot allow that.

Our nation's future won't come automatically. Achievement or downfall will be determined on our decisions to act and oppose today.

America's story started with the principle that from many, unity could emerge. E pluribus unum represents the core of DEI, the actual experience for African Americans and the proof that we can create something greater beyond anxiety and hopelessness. Together, we can maintain opportunity, honor truth and strengthen our democracy for generations to come.
